So how does a homeschooling mother of thirteen end up owning and operating a small Catholic business in Geneva? It’s a question I’ve often asked myself. At first it seemed as though it was something that just happened to me, but nothing just happens always a hand guiding me.
God is smart that way, He only shows us what we are ready to take on. This all began around seven years ago, I told myself I would just help out a dear friend Judy Sabo the co-owner of the store. I couldn’t help wanting to know her more. Now imagine a 650 sq. foot store, stacked with books and a small cluttered table in the corner. You get the picture. I needed this! Other people came with their own stories. We made connections, by sharing what was most important to us. God used our joys and sorrows, concerns, and prayers to bring us together. After the first few months, I had developed an attachment to this place, the books, and most importantly the people.
We look forward to Meeting you at the Corner!
In June of 2014 I entered into an agreement to buy the store. I wasn’t sure how it was all going to work, or how I was going to turn it around. In the moment I remembered Maria Von Trapp’s words to the effect; If something is good, of value, and you are able you should do it; regardless of you inclination. I had no plan. There was never any structure, when something needed to be done I either did it or someone else showed up and fixed it. I was really trusting in God, and He did not disappoint.
Fast forward to the spring of 2019, a customer and friend Kim, who has been actively involved from the beginning, began working with me on “goals and outcomes” for the business. Kim’s ideas of creating a space of hospitality in the store dovetailed with a list of goals I had created. We were on to something even if we didn’t know quite what. We are putting together a board of directors, we are positioning ourselves to be ready for expanding programs to meet the needs before us.
So here we are, in a new location ready to bring alternative resources to the Fox Valley Catholic Community. Are you looking for a good cause to support in the community? Then look no further we have found each other.
Judy and her partner Florence gave birth to this idea and nurtured it into being. It has pushed its way through growing pains and is now maturing into something more than a catholic book and gift store. It is becoming a space where our community gathers. We all need a place, an oasis, to nurture what unites us and brings us joy. To do this we need your help. We need you to join in creating such a place. Going forward our stories are intertwined. We need your story and faithful support.
